My grandfather Louis Perry, and great uncle Edward Perry, were 6 day racers before and after the first world war. They had great admiration for Major Taylor, and I think considered him to be a solid guy, in addition to being a great athlete. And they were Jersey City guys with the usual casual prejudices of that time. Cycling has become a somewhat more mainstream sport again these days, so it may be a great time to revisit Taylor’s career and life, and to talk about the ways in which society has changed (or hasn’t). (Taylor should’t have been forgotten as much as he has been, but on the other hand, how many other world famous (at the time) turn of the century cyclists can most people name?)
