Most kids are not going to take to heart the responsibility for another living being and their needs. Even one like myself, that truly adores animals and wants to care for them, doesn’t know how. I am all for responsible pet ownership in homes with kids. But it is really your pet. You would have to take ultimate responsibility, and be vigilant for abuse. You would need to know what care it needs, you would have to supervise, use it as a learning experience for your kid, and be willing to step in at any time. Leaving it to a child is irresponsible.
