And then things changed in previously unfathomable ways. Sinkholes of unspeakably cruel policy opened up and swallowed some of the best of us into a yawning earth. We lost some of our strongest to preventable illness, to ICE raids, to suicide, to jail, to overdoses. We now have to push forward, sobbing, carrying others uphill, while we dodged an avalanche of political violence whose upcoming impact is as unpredictable as its direction or origin.
